The Granada City Council and the Provincial Council will present a joint motion to demand an alternative plan from the Spanish Government and AENA to minimize the impact of the Granada Airport closure in May 2027.
The proposal arises from concerns about the impact that the total suspension of operations for approximately 21 days could have on key sectors such as tourism, as well as on the economic, business, academic, and cultural development of the city and province.
“
"The airport is a strategic infrastructure for Granada, and although we understand that these runway improvement works are very necessary to guarantee its safety and proper functioning, we cannot allow them to result in a total closure of the airport and, with it, serious damage to our economy without an adequate alternative plan."
The initiative proposes that the central Executive and AENA develop a comprehensive alternative plan to anticipate solutions and reduce the impact of the closure, ensuring mobility for both residents and visitors. It questions whether a closure of this magnitude would be considered at any other airport in the country.
The motion calls for technical and organizational alternatives to reduce the impact, including the possibility of adapting the work schedule to periods of lower impact. Measures are also requested to strengthen connectivity through other means of transport, especially by increasing train frequencies, with a focus on connections with Madrid.
“
"Tourism is one of Granada's main economic drivers, and a total interruption of airport activity for almost three weeks can have direct consequences on sectors such as hospitality, commerce, and academic and cultural activities."
The proposal, put forward with a constructive yet demanding attitude, also includes a request for compensatory measures to help mitigate the economic impact of the closure, as well as the demand that future actions prioritize the repercussions that a partial or total closure could have on strategic sectors.
