The Geoparque de Granada has formalized a twinning agreement with the Geoparque Algarvensis in Portugal, aiming to foster joint projects and enhance its international profile.

The Geoparque de Granada, recognized by UNESCO, has established a strategic alliance with the Geoparque Algarvensis in Portugal. This twinning agreement's primary objective is to develop collaborative projects, improve tourist experiences, and create new opportunities in tourism, science, and culture for both regions.
The protocol signing took place during the International Congress of Tourism, Hospitality, and Events, held at the University of the Algarve. At this event, the Granada delegation strengthened ties with the Portuguese territory, which encompasses the municipalities of Albufeira, Loulé, and Silves.
Beyond its institutional nature, the agreement seeks to generate tangible benefits for the Geoparque de Granada. It will facilitate the exchange of knowledge in natural heritage management, the design of joint tourism promotion strategies, and the implementation of initiatives focused on scientific outreach, environmental education, and rural development.
During the sessions, both parties shared experiences on how to leverage geological heritage as a driver for economic growth, always within a framework of sustainable and environmentally respectful tourism.
The protocol includes active collaboration among public administrations, educational centers, local businesses, interpretation spaces, and technical staff. The goal is to establish a stable cooperation network that also involves the citizenry.
This alliance represents a significant boost for the international visibility of the Geoparque de Granada within the UNESCO Global Geoparks Network. The collaboration with Algarvensis will enable joint promotional actions, strengthening the image of both territories at the European level and attracting visitors interested in nature tourism, geology, culture, and heritage.
The organization emphasizes that geoparks are more than just a UNESCO designation. Their purpose is to connect landscape with history, research, education, and the local economy, using geological heritage as a tool to retain population, revitalize rural areas, and create new development opportunities.
With this agreement, the Geoparque de Granada expands its international collaboration network and reaffirms its commitment to positioning the province as a leading European destination for natural heritage and sustainable tourism.
