The province of Granada is solidifying its position as a significant scientific center in Spain thanks to the progress of the IFMIF-DONES project, located in Escúzar. This initiative, promoted by the Andalusian Government, is transforming the region into an international benchmark for science and innovation.
The Junta de Andalucía has committed 211 million euros to this infrastructure, deemed strategic for Europe's energy future. The project focuses on researching materials capable of withstanding the extreme conditions required to develop fusion energy, a technology poised to revolutionize clean energy production.
“"Granada has the capacity to lead strategic projects and convert that potential into opportunities."
Beyond its scientific impact, IFMIF-DONES is expected to generate a socioeconomic impact exceeding 4 billion euros and create over a thousand direct and indirect jobs in technological, energy, and scientific sectors. This will strengthen Granada's position as a key technological hub in southern Europe.
The growth of the Escúzar area and the technological hub linked to the particle accelerator has also spurred improvements in road infrastructure. An investment of 2.7 million euros has been announced for resurfacing the A-385 road between Otura and La Malahá, in addition to completed works on the A-338 and a future direct connection to the A-44. These enhancements aim to facilitate access to the scientific complex and prepare the area for associated business growth.
The project is already attracting new companies and initiatives related to innovation and technological development, consolidating a scientific ecosystem that extends beyond the infrastructure itself. This commitment is presented as one of the main drivers of economic transformation for the province in the coming years.
