The Provincial Council of Almería will invest 340,000 euros in rehabilitating over 4 kilometers of the access road to Calar Alto Observatory, passing through the municipalities of Gérgal, Bacares, and Olula de Castro.

The Provincial Council of Almería has announced a significant investment for the rehabilitation of the road leading to the Calar Alto Observatory. The project will focus on a section of over 4 kilometers connecting the A-1178 road with the observatory, passing through the municipalities of Gérgal, Bacares, and Olula de Castro.
This improved stretch will be the finish line for the twelfth stage of La Vuelta Ciclista a España 2026, which will link Vera and Calar Alto on September 4th. The road is also a major tourist attraction, connecting to the observatory, which has become a hub for industrial tourism in the province.
The President of the Provincial Council, José Antonio García Alcaina, highlighted the project's importance, stating that the 340,000 euro investment will ensure smooth and safe circulation, fulfilling the commitment to connect the territory and improve road safety. The provincial institution will fully fund the work, and all necessary permits have been requested.
The project addresses the need to enhance a crucial infrastructure for mobility, science, tourism, and the province's future, especially during the summer months when road traffic increases. The route is used by observatory staff and visitors, astronomy enthusiasts, and cyclists tackling one of the most demanding climbs in the region.
Currently, the road is in poor condition, with a deteriorated surface and a narrow carriageway that hinders traffic flow and safety. The project involves rehabilitating the pavement over a 4,145-meter length and 5.70-meter width, applying a preliminary treatment with asphalt emulsion and a layer of hot asphalt mix.
