This event, bringing together Rocío brotherhoods and associations from seven American countries, will pay the first major international liturgical tribute to Pope Francis. The oldest military unit of the Argentine Army, responsible for presidential security, will escort the Rocío entourage from Plaza de Mayo to the cathedral entrance.
The authorization for this escort was signed by the head of State, a gesture that underscores the institutional relevance the Argentine Government attaches to this First Continental Rocío Encounter in America, organized by the Almonte Mother Brotherhood.
The Eucharist, beginning at 11:30 AM, will be officiated by the Archbishop of Buenos Aires and Primate of Argentina, Monsignor Jorge Ignacio García Cuerva. The Simpecado of the Almonte Mother Brotherhood will preside over the altar, accompanied by the banners of participating entities from Argentina, the United States, Brazil, Chile, Puerto Rico, Cuba, and Venezuela.
Musical accompaniment will be provided by the San Juan Rocío Choir, the Andalucía Cultural Center of Buenos Aires Choir, and the Rocío for the Americas Choir of San Germán. The drummers from the Almonte Mother Brotherhood will open and close the liturgy, recreating the soundscape of the Rocío village within the Buenos Aires cathedral.
At the conclusion of the Eucharist, a permanent memorial dedicated to Pope Francis will be blessed and incorporated into the metropolitan temple. This commemorative space transforms the day into a dual tribute, liturgical and monumental, to the pontiff who served as archbishop in this cathedral for fifteen years.
The celebration holds special emotional significance, particularly following the gestures that connected Pope Francis with the Rocío world. In December 2024, a delegation of over 120 Rocío brotherhoods was received by the pontiff at the Vatican, where the Almonte Mother Brotherhood extended an invitation for him to visit the Rocío village. Although the trip could not materialize due to his health and subsequent passing, this mass serves as a spiritual response to that unfulfilled engagement.
The Pontifical Rocío Mass will conclude the First Continental Rocío Encounter in America and will be the inaugural event of a week of tributes in Argentina marking the first anniversary of Pope Francis's death. The conclave is promoted by the Almonte Mother Brotherhood with the support of the Andalusian Ministry of Tourism, Culture and Sport and Andalucía Exterior of the Junta de Andalucía, the Huelva Provincial Council, the Government of the Argentine Nation, and the Government of the Autonomous City of Buenos Aires.
