The Huelva town of Berrocal faces a severe economic crisis following the devastating fire in Niebla. The flames destroyed more than 90% of the trees in the municipal area, directly impacting the sole cork cooperative operating in Spain.
As a direct consequence of the blaze, the cooperative is now completely out of cork stock. Productive activity will be halted for an extended period, as the trees will take years to recover.
