Bodegas Tradición has presented a project, currently in its draft phase, to the Sanlúcar City Council focused on the heritage recovery of the historic Bodegas Argüeso block. The proposal, named the Santo Domingo Project, covers an area of over 14,000 square meters in the city center, which has been abandoned and in ruins for many years.
Driven by Helena Rivero, president of Bodegas Tradición, and TransforState, the project prioritizes the recovery of public spaces. This private initiative proposes opening a previously closed block to the public, creating new squares and meeting areas, and connecting the interior with the historic center by opening a street and widening internal alleyways.
Another fundamental pillar is the rehabilitation of the historical heritage of the former convent of Santo Domingo, including the sacristy, refectory, and cloister. The intervention aims to restore these deteriorated spaces and open them to the public to showcase the city's history.
The historical spaces are intended for cultural and general public use, featuring a picture gallery and exhibition areas dedicated to the history of the former convent and Sanlúcar's wine-making tradition. The project also includes the construction of a high-level hotel integrated into the complex.
Furthermore, the project plans to revive the winery and the Manzanilla de Sanlúcar de Barrameda brand ‘San León’, returning the winery to its role in wine production and aging, which was a defining activity of this block for over a century.
The project promoters thanked the mayor, Carmen Álvarez, for her willingness to review the project and expressed their commitment to collaborating with the City Council in its development. Mayor Álvarez stated that the Municipal Urban Planning Department will study the proposal, emphasizing the local government's objective to protect historical heritage and enhance Sanlúcar's urban environment.
