The planning for the Circumnavigation Month, to be held in September, was the central focus of a meeting chaired by Mayor Carmen Álvarez. Also present were Enrique Román, president of the Círculo de Artesanos de Sanlúcar, and Manuel Fernández, head of the La Orilla beach bar, along with municipal technicians. The City Council, the Círculo, and La Orilla are jointly organizing this event.
The program includes more than 20 initiatives and benefits from the collaboration of various local entities and companies, such as the Castillo de Santiago, the Real Sociedad de Carreras de Caballos, the Real Club Náutico, the Regulatory Council of the Denominations of Origin Jerez-Xérès-Sherry and Manzanilla-Sanlúcar de Barrameda, the Manolo Sanlúcar Foundation, the Casa Medina Sidonia Foundation, the Nao Victoria Foundation, flamenco associations, and sports clubs.
Activities will commence on Tuesday, September 1st, with the medieval music reinterpretation event ‘Espejo de las estrellas’ in the Jardín de Las Piletas. The program will run until September 20th, featuring events in various city locations, including the Palacio Municipal, the Auditorio Municipal ‘Manolo Sanlúcar’, the Centro Cultural La Victoria, the Exploraterra Sanlúcar cultural center, Castillo de Santiago, Palacio Ducal de Medina Sidonia, Jardín de Las Piletas, Plaza de la Paz, Plaza Manuel Romero Pazos, and the La Orilla beach bar.
The central day will be Sunday, September 6th, with the symbolic landing on Bajo de Guía beach followed by a parade through Sanlúcar to Castillo de Santiago for the Dinner with Elcano, commemorating the return of the sailors of the First Circumnavigation in 1522.
The program also includes a medieval market from September 18th to 20th in Plaza de la Paz and Plaza Manuel Romero Pazos, featuring performances by the Banda Morisca, jugglers, and storytellers. Additionally, the Forum ‘Sanlúcar y los Océanos’, top-level musical events, guided tours of streets and monuments, and Manzanilla wine tastings are scheduled.
Mayor Carmen Álvarez highlighted the “close collaboration” between the City Council and local groups, acknowledging the Círculo de Artesanos' contribution to the city's culture and history. She encouraged residents and visitors to participate in the activities, with the full program available on the municipal website.
