Chess in Sanlúcar takes center stage again this summer with the celebration of two highly prestigious international tournaments. The city continues to strengthen its position as an Andalusian chess hub thanks to the efforts of the Shahmat Chess Club, an entity with over four decades dedicated to promoting this sport.
The municipal delegate for Sports, David González, along with the president of the Shahmat Club, Daniel Escobar, and the president of the Real Sociedad de Carreras de Caballos, Rafael Hidalgo, have unveiled the official posters for both events. The first is the XXXIX Sanlúcar de Barrameda International Chess Open, scheduled for Sunday, July 26, at the Casa de la Juventud. This edition will feature three simultaneous tournaments: Open Ciudad de Sanlúcar, Open Sub1600 FADA, and Escolar Ajeduca.
Following this, on Thursday, August 13, the IV International Chess Open Real Sociedad Carreras de Caballos de Sanlúcar will take place. This unique competition will be held at the facilities on Las Piletas Beach, coinciding with the festive atmosphere of the traditional horse races. The tournament, which successfully unites two Sanlúcar symbols, chess and beach racing, will also offer three competitions: Open Carreras, Circuito Diputación de Cádiz de Ajedrez, and Escolar Ajeduca.
Daniel Escobar, president of the organizing club, expressed gratitude for the City Council's collaboration in organizing and promoting these events, as well as the cooperation with the Horse Racing Society.
For his part, David González conveyed the support of the mayor, Carmen Álvarez, and expressed his pride in hosting these two prestigious tournaments. "These competitions are not just about chess, but also about education, values, and culture," stated the councilor, concluding that the Delegation will continue to support such activities that undoubtedly bring enormous benefit to our society.
