The Mayor of Sanlúcar, Carmen Álvarez, has visited the rehabilitation works of the old Royal Prison, which will be transformed into a House of Culture. The project, with a budget of over one million euros, aims to revitalize the Barrio Alto.

The Mayor of Sanlúcar, Carmen Álvarez, visited today the rehabilitation works of the old Royal Prison. The awarded company, Construcciones Serrot, has been carrying out the work since last March, with the goal of opening the building as a House of Culture. The investment amounts to 1,060,828.88 euros, with an execution period of nine months.
Accompanied by municipal technicians and company representatives, Carmen Álvarez provided an update on the ongoing works. She recalled that the previous municipal government had "left these actions abandoned," and the current administration had to "take on their completion." The City Council had to terminate previous contracts to initiate the current process.
The completion of the works is crucial to meet the deadlines for the Edusi program and Feder funding, as failure to do so would oblige the City Council to return one million euros, a management attributed to the previous local government.
Carmen Álvarez explained that the old Royal Prison will be transformed into a multifunctional, participatory, and versatile public space. This project, in addition to enhancing the building's value, will boost activity in the now pedestrianized Plaza de la Paz, the recently renovated Plaza Manuel Romero Pazos, and the entire Barrio Alto district. "It will not only host cultural events but also other types of activities available to the citizens of Sanlúcar, especially those in the Barrio Alto area," the Mayor highlighted.
These works, reactivated by Carmen Álvarez's government, represent a significant investment for the sociocultural life and historical heritage of Sanlúcar. They required the pertinent authorization from the Territorial Delegation of Culture to proceed.
