The emblematic Castillito de Bajo de Guía, recently restored as the Exploraterra Sanlúcar center dedicated to the First World Circumnavigation, hosted the opening conference of the XI 'Sanlúcar and the Oceans' Forum. The inaugural lecture was delivered by historian and archivist Manuel Romero Tallafigo.
The mayor, Carmen Álvarez, attended this event, now a staple in the annual programming linked to the Circumnavigation. The opening lecture, titled 'Historical Recreation of September 6, 1522. Anecdotes and Milestones of Elcano's Arrival in Sanlúcar de Barrameda,' provided attendees with insights into the return of Juan Sebastián Elcano and the survivors of the expedition.
The choice of the Castillito de Bajo de Guía for this conference also served to highlight the restoration of this historic site. The Exploraterra Sanlúcar cultural center has been returned to the public, becoming a new hub for disseminating information about the Circumnavigation, fulfilling the municipal commitment to unblock this long-pending project.
The forum will continue on the following Thursdays, September 10 and 17. On the 10th, at the Centro Cultural La Victoria at 8:30 PM, philosopher Pedro Insua will give a lecture titled ‘Salamanca and the Cosmology of the Nautical Sphere and Imperial Cartographies.’ On the 17th, in the Patio de Columnas of the Municipal Palace at the same time, Carlos Fernández-Andrade Marín will present ‘The Hispanic Weight (Real de a Ocho): First US Dollar.’
This series of lectures, with free admission until capacity is reached, is part of the Month of the Circumnavigation. This event, organized by the City Council along with the Círculo de Artesanos and the beach bar La Orilla, includes numerous activities until September 20.
