The new border control system at the Port of Motril will be operational for the upcoming Operation Strait Crossing (OPE), marking an advancement in the modernization of its infrastructure and compliance with European border control regulations.
This initiative is part of the deployment of the European Entry and Exit System (EES) and the future ETIAS system, promoted by the European Union to enhance security and improve the management of passengers from third countries.
The model implemented in the Granada port uses automated kiosks, a system already in operation at international airports like Madrid-Barajas. It allows for swift registration through passport scanning and verification, along with the capture of biometric data such as facial images and fingerprints.
Passengers will complete the registration process under the supervision of National Police officers, ensuring both security and the smooth flow of travelers.
The project is part of an agreement between the Ministry of the Interior and Puertos del Estado (Spanish State Ports), to which the Port of Motril and other Spanish ports with international connections have adhered.
The operation is funded by the European Union, covering approximately 75% of the equipment acquisition cost and 100% of its installation.
