The Deputy Mayor for Urban Quality, Juan Fernando Hernández, has reported that the receipts for the Waste Management Service Fee have started to be sent to the citizens of Motril. This measure responds to the legal obligation established by the central government's Law 7/2022, which requires local taxes to reflect the real costs of the service and move towards sustainability and pay-as-you-throw principles.
The City Council approved the new Fiscal Ordinance regulating the Fee for the Provision of the Municipal Waste Collection, Transport, Treatment, and Disposal Service to comply with Article 11.3 of the aforementioned law. Hernández stated that although the government team did not wish to revise the ordinance, the legal imperative from the central government necessitated its adaptation, always seeking the citizen's benefit with the support of municipal technicians.
The receipts are being sent both electronically to the legal representatives of companies and by postal mail to individuals, via administrative notification with acknowledgment of receipt. From 2027 onwards, the fee will be issued again through a periodic receipt and can be direct debited or included in special payment systems. Direct debits valid before January 1, 2026, will be automatically applied, unless expressly revoked or modified before December 31, 2026.
The council has conducted a prior information campaign, encouraging citizens to provide or update their contact details. The Taxpayer Assistance Office has extended its hours on Tuesdays and Thursdays from 5:00 PM to 7:00 PM until September 30 to address any queries.
During the 2026 fiscal year, the fee will be managed through individual assessments. Payment deadlines vary according to the notification date of the assessment, and the receipt can be split if it exceeds 150 euros, in accordance with the General Tax Law.
The objective of the government team has been to ensure that domestic households in Motril are not negatively affected by this law, aiming to maintain or even lower the receipt for taxpayers. Fees are established based on the square meters of the property, with amounts ranging from 82.75 euros for homes up to 59 m² to 312 euros for those of 350 m² or more. The majority of receipts will fall between 102 and 122 euros.
A reduction is available for property owners whose monthly income (of the owner and all registered residents) does not exceed 1,000 euros, with corrections of 100% (up to 500 euros), 75% (from 500.01 to 700 euros), and 50% (from 700.01 to 1,000 euros).
