The Motril City Council has presented the guidelines for the 5th Open-Air Painting Contest, focusing on the city's Industrial Sugar Heritage, scheduled for October 17th.

The contest, designed to promote knowledge and value the city's industrial sugar infrastructure, facilities, and representative landscapes, has become a benchmark for heritage recovery and creating opportunities for future generations.
Submitted artworks must clearly depict the landscapes, buildings, and elements of Motril's sugar industrial heritage. To assist artists, the municipal website features a guide to these locations, complemented by the Fábrica del Pilar, home to the Sugar Industrial Museum.

"To unite heritage, culture, and art, with the objective of continuing to bring our rich sugar heritage closer to the citizens and thus making it a source of inspiration for artists."

Madelin Banqueri · Municipal Councilor for Industrial Sugar Heritage
Councilor Madelin Banqueri emphasized the importance of this event, born from the purpose of "uniting heritage, culture, and art." She highlighted that the initiative seeks to "continue bringing our rich sugar heritage closer to the citizens and thus making it a source of inspiration for artists."
Banqueri added that the department is working to ensure the factory "is not just a place to know, but also a heritage we feel and make our own, strengthening that sense of belonging." She stated, "This contest is an opportunity for artists, whether professionals or amateurs, to explore, observe, and reinterpret our industrial heritage through painting, capturing with their own vision all the magic and essence of our industrial spaces."
Interested participants must register through the Electronic Headquarters of the General Registry of the City Council, the Post Office, or the SARA network before Friday, October 16th, at 12:00 PM. A national ID or passport will be required.
The contest offers several cash prizes: a first prize of 2,300 euros, a second of 1,300 euros, a third of 750 euros, a fourth of 450 euros, and a fifth of 350 euros. Additionally, a special prize of 250 euros will be awarded to a local artist, requiring proof of residency in the municipality.
The complete contest rules are available on the municipal website. The councilor thanked participants from previous editions for helping to "highlight and preserve our beloved industrial heritage" and invited local artists and visitors to participate or enjoy the artists' work during a day of art and fellowship aimed at exciting and sparking citizens' curiosity about their sugar heritage.
