The tragic event occurred early Wednesday morning when the young player, known in the sports world as ‘Papi’, fell from the rooftop of a six-story building. The Civil Guard has launched an investigation to clarify the circumstances of the incident. The impact occurred against the railing of the sixth-floor terrace, which was damaged, before he fell to the street below on Calle Helga Söhner.
Kenneth Daniel Banegas Mejía, born in 2008, had been a promising figure in Granada's youth football. Last season, he played for We FC, and for the two previous seasons, he was with Churriana de la Vega, competing in the youth and cadet categories. His talent led to him being called up by the Granada regional team in lower age groups.
“"With infinite sadness, we regret the passing of our former player Kenneth. We lose a talent on the field, but above all, an incredible person and a unique teammate. To us, you will always be our ‘Papi’. Your eternal smile will continue to guide us from above. The club stands with you. Rest in peace, Kenneth. We will never forget you."
Both Churriana de la Vega and We FC have issued statements expressing their deep sorrow and sending condolences to the young player's family and loved ones. Churriana highlighted his quality as a player and his personal character, while We FC emphasized that Kenneth will always be part of their history.
The shock has spread throughout the grassroots sports scene in Granada. The Granada Delegation of the Andalusian Federation has also lamented the footballer's death, extending its condolences to his family and friends. Teams from across the province have shared farewell messages on social media, including UD Estrellas Chana Barrio, where Kenneth's brother plays. This club feels the loss as its own and has called for collaboration to help the family cope with the expenses arising from this sad situation.
