The mayor of Torremolinos, Margarita del Cid, has presented a new proposal to decrease the waste fee by 12.5%, scheduled to be implemented from January 1, 2027. This initiative follows a 20% reduction implemented since 2023, resulting in a total decrease of 32.5% in the fee since the current government took office.
Del Cid highlighted that this measure positions Torremolinos "against the current" trend of rising fees in many Spanish municipalities. The mayor reaffirmed the council's commitment to ensuring citizens "do not pay a single euro more for public services," emphasizing the importance of reviewing accounts and costs to align revenue with service provision.
The proposal, supported by an economic report from municipal services, anticipates that revenue from the new tariffs will cover the costs of waste collection, transport, and treatment in 2027 without generating a deficit. The mayor also emphasized commitments to employment protection and service quality reached with workers.
Specific examples of the reduction were provided: a household previously paying 175 euros before the first reduction will pay 122.47 euros from January 2027, and another that paid 300 euros will see its bill reduced to 209.95 euros. This represents an annual saving of 52.53 euros and 90.05 euros, respectively, compared to pre-first reduction rates.
The Town Hall is also developing municipal regulations for 2027 to better allocate waste generation costs between domestic, commercial, and industrial activities, reflecting Torremolinos's tourism-driven economy. The goal is to achieve a fairer and more accurate cost distribution for each user type.
