A special task force, composed of operators and heavy machinery, worked during the early hours of Friday morning on the beaches of the Mijas coastline to remove a large quantity of invasive algae affecting the Malaga coast. The work extended from 01:00 to 10:00 AM.
Although the exact kilograms removed have not been specified, the Mijas City Council indicated that it was a "complicated" night. The operation included a tractor, a rotary tiller, a backhoe loader, and two trucks. Additionally, over a hundred workers joined the cleaning efforts starting at 06:00 AM.
The councilor for beaches, Daniel Jesús Gómez, stated that the fight against this Asian algae, technically named Rugulopterix Okamurae, is "almost daily." The most affected beaches so far are El Bombo, Rocas del Mar, Riviera, and El Faro.
So far this year, the Mijas City Council has removed over 1,600 tons of algae from its coastline. The presence of this marine plant has increased significantly since 2023, when more than 600 tons were collected between June and August. For these tasks, the council has allocated over 1.5 million euros since 2024.
