The Department of Parks and Gardens maintains a daily team of 16 workers dedicated to restoring green spaces. These tasks include replanting species, replacing substrates, and repairing irrigation infrastructure, which is severely damaged during the animals' nightly foraging.
Among the areas most affected by this issue are the surroundings of the La Cala Cultural Center, Calazul, Doña Ermita, the gardens of San Manuel Church, El Compás, and La Muralla. The frequency of the damage requires constant maintenance, including weekend shifts to ensure the recovery of the affected areas.
The council noted that the proliferation of this species, combined with the large extent of public gardens in the municipality, complicates management. The animals often dig into freshly treated flowerbeds and lawns, causing pipe failures that lead to flooding and the loss of entire plantings.
It is worth noting that the Regional Government of Andalusia declared a temporary hunting emergency area in the region last year, acknowledging the health, environmental, and road safety risks associated with the high density of wild boars and feral pigs in the territory.
