The council of Mijas has given the green light for the transfer of two municipal plots, totaling 9,052 square meters, to the Junta de Andalucía. The aim is to expand the infant and primary school (CEIP) Jardín Botánico, located in La Cala.
These plots, designated as facilities, are being made available to the Regional Ministry of Educational Development and Vocational Training. The CEIP Jardín Botánico currently serves 520 students, aged between 3 and 12 years, covering from Early Childhood Education to sixth grade of Primary.
The school's current plot is situated within a block that is completed by the newly ceded land and a commercial and restaurant area. Once the Junta de Andalucía formally accepts the land transfer, an agreement will be signed between the two institutions.
This land transfer process was initiated in November 2023 by the current governing team. Following the processing of all necessary reports, including those on heritage, topography, architecture, and infrastructure, the local government board gave its final approval.
The Law on Local Autonomy of Andalusia (LAULA) mandates cooperation between city councils and the regional educational administration. The law assigns Local Administration responsibilities for the conservation, maintenance, and oversight of buildings intended for public centers of early childhood education, primary education, and special education, as well as providing land for the construction of new public educational centers.
