Adif, the rail infrastructure manager, has announced the suspension of services between Malaga and Fuengirola to facilitate these essential works. The project encompasses the doubling of tracks between Campamento Benítez and Plaza Mayor, alongside crucial repairs to the airport tunnel and the section beneath the Guadalmedina river.
The shutdown is anticipated to last at least five and a half months, extending from late 2027 into early 2028, though definitive dates are yet to be finalized. The primary impact will be on the stretch between Malaga and Torremolinos, requiring closure for work on approximately three kilometers of track.
The upgrades could reduce waiting times between trains from 20 minutes to 15 minutes, potentially increasing the number of trains per hour.
This initiative is part of broader efforts by the Ministerio de Transportes y Movilidad Sostenible (Ministry of Transport and Sustainable Mobility) to improve the line's capacity. Officials have indicated that these enhancements could shorten train waiting times from 20 to 15 minutes, potentially allowing for more frequent services. However, achieving this full improvement hinges on a second track doubling between Carvajal and Benalmádena, which has not yet progressed.
During the closure, rail operator Renfe will provide alternative transport options, though the company states it is too early to finalize these arrangements. In addition to track works, there are plans to extend station platforms from 80 to 100 meters to accommodate longer trains, but the specific stations to be upgraded remain unclear. The track doubling and platform expansion will be carried out simultaneously.
Separately, a section of the C-2 line will also close for up to nine months between Gobantes and Cártama for tunnel and bridge repairs. This will cut off parts of the Guadalhorce Valley, leaving only a reduced service between Cártama and Malaga city.
