This measure is part of a project by the Naturalist Group Sierra Bermeja ‘Grunsber’, subsidized by the council, which seeks to significantly increase artificial refuges for these protected species in the town.
Recently, an environmental education activity was held with schoolchildren from Federico García Lorca school, who participated in the installation of these boxes in various parts of the municipality. During the event, students learned about the ecological importance of bats and other raptors in urban ecosystems.
Grunsber experts highlight the role of bats in biological control, noting that a single bat can consume up to 150 mosquitoes daily, which helps naturally reduce populations of annoying and publicly harmful insects. All bat species are legally protected due to their ecological importance and declining populations.
Furthermore, the European scops owl, a small nocturnal raptor classified as a vulnerable species, also contributes to pest control by feeding on insects such as moths, crickets, and grasshoppers. Through this project, the Estepona City Council reaffirms its commitment to biodiversity conservation and environmental awareness among young people.
