The operation, which has already mobilized an initial tranche of 75 million euros, aims to address the water stress affecting the region. The funds will improve water management efficiency in towns including Marbella, Estepona, Fuengirola, Mijas, and Torremolinos, serving a population of over one million residents.
The investment plan includes replacing over 20 kilometers of sewage collectors and upgrading 30 kilometers of drinking water pipes. Additionally, plans include building a new header tank at the Río Verde Water Treatment Plant and implementing energy efficiency measures at the Marbella Desalination Plant.
This funding is part of the EIB Group's Water Resilience Program, which plans to invest 15 billion euros across Europe through 2027. The project follows an investment plan approved in 2024 to mitigate the impact of recent droughts in the Malaga region.
