The European Investment Bank (EIB) has approved financing of 175 million euros for Acosol, the public company of the Mancomunidad de Municipios of the Western Costa del Sol, aimed at modernizing water infrastructure.

This significant financial injection will enable progress on key projects for the comprehensive water cycle improvement in the region. For Mijas, improvements to the treatment plants of La Cala and Cerro del Águila, as well as water regeneration for irrigation, will benefit.
As reported by the Councillor for Infrastructure, Juan José Torres, this funding is a crucial boost to undertake projects that will optimize the quality of supply, provision, treatment, and sanitation in the municipality. Of the total 175 million euros, 75 million are allocated to this first phase of investment.
Given the joint nature of these projects, the EIB's financial support will positively impact approximately one million people in municipalities such as Benahavis, Benalmádena, Casares, Estepona, Fuengirola, Istán, Manilva, Marbella, Ojén, and Torremolinos. This figure rises to 1.4 million during the summer months due to the population increase.
The 75 million from the first phase will accelerate investments aimed at creating regenerated water networks for more efficient and sustainable irrigation. The projects also include improvements to the supply network, increased efficiency of the Marbella desalination plant through greater use of solar energy, and sanitation improvements in various areas of Mijas.
Among the joint projects that will benefit Mijas are the rehabilitation of water production, transport, and storage systems, the replacement of over 20 kilometers of sanitation collectors with losses and infiltrations, and the renewal of more than 30 kilometers of drinking water pipes.
The main objective of the project is to alleviate water stress in the Costa del Sol, promoting environmental sustainability and improving services for citizens. Reducing water losses, enhancing reuse, and more efficient water management aim to address recurrent drought risks and strengthen the region's resilience to climate change.
Additionally, within the framework of investment fees for Mijas, an investment of over 10 million euros is planned for 2027-2029 for the drinking water supply to Mijas Pueblo from the Las Lagunas area.
The European Investment Bank Group (EIB Group) is the financial arm of the European Union, owned by the 27 Member States, and is one of the largest multilateral development banks globally.
