The Guardia Civil, in collaboration with Belgian authorities, has broken up a significant drug trafficking network operating from the Costa del Sol. This organization was dedicated to sending drugs to at least six European countries, employing an ingenious method to conceal the merchandise.
The operation, dubbed 'Waves', began after Belgian authorities raised an alarm about suspicious shipments originating from southern Spain. The Malaga Judicial Police traced the source back to a network established in Marbella.
Investigators accuse the group of hiding marijuana and hashish inside expanded polystyrene coolers, carefully sealing them to mask any smell. They then allegedly disguised the parcels with fictitious sender details before handing them over to delivery companies for international distribution.
In a coordinated international operation, six searches were carried out across Spain and several European countries, leading to the arrest of nine suspects. Three of them were apprehended on the Costa del Sol, while the rest were detained in Belgium, Italy, and Poland.
Police intercepted a total of 17 parcels containing 47.58 kg of marijuana and 8.3 kg of hashish, along with €23,000 in cash. Those arrested are under investigation for drug trafficking and involvement in a criminal organization, and the Marbella-based suspects have been placed in provisional detention.
