The Society of Speleological Research Caxara (SIE Caxara) is organizing a new edition of the “Bat Night”, an environmental outreach and awareness event that will take place in two locations within the municipality: El Secadero on Friday, September 18, and Casares town on Friday, September 25.
The main objective of this initiative is to introduce the public to the world of bats, highlight their crucial role in ecosystems, and debunk myths associated with these species. The program will include introductory talks, a nocturnal workshop on localization and identification using radio frequency equipment, and activities designed for children.
Younger attendees can enjoy the storytelling session “Murci Historias”, an activity aimed at sparking their curiosity about these mammals. The talks will be complemented by the exhibition “Vecinos Nocturnos” (Nocturnal Neighbors) and various educational materials.
This event is part of SIE Caxara's “Karst 3C Project: Know, Communicate, and ” and is linked to the European agreement for the conservation of European bats, as well as being registered with EUROBATS' International Bat Night 2026.
The initiative is supported by the Casares Town Council, the Department of Chiroptera at the Doñana Biological Station, the UNED, the Pablo de Olavide University, SECEMU, SEDECK, and the Sociedad Gaditana de Historia Natural.
The events will be held as follows: in El Secadero on September 18 in Plaza de Andalucía; and in Casares town on September 25, with conferences in Plaza de España and the echolocation workshop at the Camino de los Molinos Parking Lot.
The detailed program includes participant reception at 7:30 PM, followed by the talk “Vecinos Nocturnos” by Alfredo Valencia (SIE Caxara) at 7:45 PM. At 8:15 PM, Jorge L. Romo (SIE Caxara) will give the talk “Murciélagos y Biodiversidad” (Bats and Biodiversity), and at 8:45 PM, Susana Oda and Begoña Cabrera (SIE Caxara) will present the storytelling session “Murci Historias”. The practical echolocation, control, and monitoring workshop will begin at 9:15 PM.
Through this initiative, SIE Caxara aims to promote the knowledge and conservation of bats, emphasizing their importance for the ecological balance and nocturnal biodiversity of Casares.
