The service interruption will affect the section between the capital and Torremolinos, necessitated by the duplication of the line in the segment from Campamento Benítez to Plaza Mayor. Additionally, repairs will be made to various stations and improvements to the airport tunnel and the one running under the Guadalmedina. This action will be coordinated with platform extensions in the capital.
According to Adif's Capacity Restriction Catalog, updated on March 31, the dates are indicative, as the works have not yet been tendered. Nevertheless, a total closure of at least five and a half months is planned. The Ministry of Transport has stated that these improvements aim to reduce the waiting time between trains from 20 to 15 minutes, although technical reports suggest that a second duplication, between Carvajal and Benalmádena, will be required to achieve this goal.
Currently, the duplication of the 2.8 kilometers of track is in the project drafting phase, with its tender awarded for 18 months in March 2025. If deadlines are met, the project will be ready by September of this year. As this is a Public Service Obligation (OSP) line, Renfe will need to activate an alternative transport plan during the closure, although the company has not yet finalized the details.
Regarding platform extensions, necessary for larger trains, there are no specific dates. It is known that the duplication works will be carried out simultaneously with platform extensions, although Adif has not specified which ones or to what extent. The province requires extensions at Los Boliches, Carvajal, El Pinillo, Plaza Mayor, and Centro Alameda stations, in addition to the remodeling of Benalmádena station to reach 200 meters.
An Adif communications spokesperson noted that specific projects are not yet known, beyond the one tendered for the duplication and improvement of Plaza Mayor, which includes the duplication of the halt, improvements, and a level crossing. Additionally, the document foresees a nine-month closure on line C-2, between Gobantes and Cártama, at the end of this year, for tunnel and bridge treatment, affecting access to the rest of Guadalhorce.
