The president of the Alliance of Civilizations, Miguel Ángel Moratinos, announced on Tuesday the adherence of both organizations to the commemorative activities. Moratinos highlighted Averroes as a “heritage of humanity” and a crucial bridge between cultures and knowledge, whose work should not be overlooked when reviewing great historical figures.
The main event, scheduled for October, will feature a round table discussing Arab, European, and Western philosophical thought, as well as Averroes' scientific contributions. Significant institutional participation is expected from Spain and Morocco, alongside entities such as Casa Árabe, the Junta de Andalucía, and various academic organizations.
“"Averroes, although Hispano-Moroccan, is a heritage of all humanity."
Moratinos emphasized the Cordoban thinker's role in integrating knowledge from different traditions and transmitting it to the West, highlighting his work as a translator and disseminator of Greek philosophy, especially Aristotle, and his subsequent influence on figures like Thomas Aquinas.
Furthermore, Averroes' advocacy for the balance between religion and science was underscored, a principle that, according to Moratinos, was crucial for positioning reason as a pillar of critical thinking in both the Islamic and Western worlds. The Ambassador of Morocco to Spain, Karima Benyaich, also expressed her country's support for the commemoration, emphasizing Averroes' exceptionality and the excellent state of Hispano-Moroccan relations.
The program's presentation took place at the Government Subdelegation in Córdoba, with the presence of subdelegate Ana López and the general director of Casa Árabe, Miguel Moro. All agreed on the symbolism of Córdoba as a space for coexistence and intercultural dialogue, a spirit that Averroes' figure embodies and that this international celebration aims to project.
