UCO tests ultraviolet light to strengthen olive groves

A pioneering trial in Cordoba aims to reduce phytosanitary treatments by activating the olive tree's natural defenses with UV Boosting technology.

Olive grove in Andalusia receiving ultraviolet light treatment to enhance its resistance.

The University of Córdoba has initiated a pioneering trial at the El Valenciano farm to evaluate the use of ultraviolet light pulses, known as UV Boosting technology, in olive cultivation.

The main objective of this initiative is to enhance the natural defense mechanisms of olive plants, improving their adaptation and resilience to stress situations and certain diseases. This approach seeks to offer alternatives for reducing reliance on conventional phytosanitary treatments and promoting more sustainable agriculture.
UV Boosting technology, driven by the Japanese company Kubota and developed in collaboration with Balam Agriculture and the University of Córdoba (UCO), does not directly attack pathogens. Instead, it stimulates the plant's internal responses, strengthening its overall vigor.
Research work is already underway at the El Valenciano Rural Innovation Hub, where the initial results are being analyzed. The initiative aims to provide new tools for addressing key agronomic challenges in the olive sector.

"The project recently attracted the interest of an international delegation of Kubota executives, who visited El Valenciano Rural Innovation Hub to see the trial's progress firsthand."

During the visit by executives from Kubota, along with representatives from their official dealer Talleres Corycas, Balam Agriculture, El Valenciano Rural Innovation Hub, and the University of Córdoba, the experimental plots were toured. A technical session was also held detailing the project's objectives, the methodology applied, and the potential future applications of this technology in olive cultivation. Researcher Carlos Trapero represented the UCO at the event.
