The Algarabía program aims to bring diverse audiences closer to the cultural richness of medieval Mediterranean societies and beyond, through interpretations that blend tradition with contemporary approaches. The festival draws inspiration from the medieval stage, present in courts, churches, and markets, to recreate the atmosphere of 10th-century Córdoba.
This sixth edition's lineup features four ensembles. On August 5th, Artefactum will present 'Tempus est iocondum', a musical journey through medieval European music from the 12th to 14th centuries. The following day, August 6th, Umayya will perform Arabic music, including devotional chants and whirling dervish dance.
On August 7th, Ibrahim Keivo Band will perform 'Cuando caiga la tarde' ('As the afternoon falls'), a show incorporating music from the Mesopotamian tradition with dance. The festival will conclude on August 8th with Layali/Amanés and their proposal 'Viaje de Maqam. Ecos del Mediterráneo' ('Maqam Journey. Echoes of the Mediterranean'), exploring musical connections between Andalusian and Greek rebetiko traditions.
The performances, starting at 10:00 PM, feature replicas of historical instruments and aim to recreate the ambiance of taverns, courts, and squares of the era with rigor and freshness, balancing instrumental pieces, devotional cantigas, and secular lyrics.
