This special program, still being finalized, will include a "major cultural event," a "major institutional event," an exhibition, and two roundtables. These discussions will feature prominent European and Arab scientists and philosophers, as announced by Miguel Ángel Moratinos, president of the Alliance of Civilizations.
The Averroes Year initiative, promoted by figures such as Carmen Calvo, Emilio González Ferrín, and Manuel Pimentel, aims to highlight the Cordoban scholar's legacy internationally. Events will take place in various cities across Europe and Africa, including Madrid, Paris, and Marrakech, concluding in the latter on December 10.
“"Averroes has always been the symbol of the Hispano-Moroccan relationship. The bridge between both countries is increasingly solid."
Moratinos emphasized the relevance of the "spirit of Córdoba" in the current context of global tensions, highlighting that Averroes, "a man of dialogue and understanding," belongs to all humanity. The Ambassador of Morocco to Spain, Karima Benyaich, also praised the philosopher for his advocacy of coexistence and women's rights in the 12th century.
The president of the Alliance of Civilizations stressed that the 900th anniversary coincides with a "critical moment in humanity's evolution," calling for "the force of law and thought to prevail over the law of force" to resolve global problems.
