After several unsuccessful attempts at auction, the canvas The Adoration of the Magi, a creation by the distinguished Antonio del Castillo, has finally found a new owner. A private individual has completed the acquisition of this piece for their personal collection, thus ensuring its return to Córdoba, the city where the acclaimed painter was born, as confirmed by sources close to the operation.
The new owner negotiated directly with the last auction house that had tried, without success, to sell the work. In previous auctions, the starting price for the painting had reached 20,000 euros. The piece depicts a biblical passage frequently addressed by the author, who has a similarly themed work in the sanctuary of Nuestra Señora de la Fuensanta.
The scene depicted in the canvas is the Epiphany, with the Holy Family positioned on the right and the Three Wise Men, accompanied by their retinue, appearing from the left. King Melchior, with his characteristic white beard, kneels before the Virgin, Saint Joseph, and the Child Jesus to offer his gifts, while one of his pages holds his long cloak. Balthazar and Gaspar, along with numerous members of their entourage, stand upright.
A traditional detail in depictions of the Nativity scene, the ox, also appears in the work, lying at the feet of Saint Joseph, as is customary. The characters' garments stand out for their rich colors and the sense of movement they convey. Most of Antonio del Castillo's (1616-1668) works are located in Córdoba, the city where he lived most of his life and where he died.
Sources close to the transaction indicated that the artwork will require urgent restoration, given its delicate state of preservation. Both the color and the integrity of the canvas show significant cracks and deterioration, a result of the relentless passage of time. The painting measures 111 x 159 centimeters, and it is expected that the restoration work will allow for the rediscovery of details and the recovery of the original colors once accumulated surface layers are removed.
