The RNM-350 research group, specializing in botany, is developing innovative solutions to optimize water use in olive groves and enhance crop resilience to drought.

The RNM-350 group, composed mainly of botanists, focuses its research lines on Geobotany and Aeropalinology, with direct applications in biodiversity conservation, ecosystem restoration, and the agroforestry sector. A key area is the study and management of vegetation covers in olive groves to protect the soil and reduce erosion.
Palynological studies, which analyze airborne pollen and spores, are also fundamental. This data is used to understand olive grove phenology and production, as well as to study the temporal evolution of airborne pollen in relation to climate change. The group also works on the conservation of threatened flora, such as the endemic species Cathissa villasina.
In terms of projects, the group has participated in selecting native seed mixtures for olive grove vegetation covers, in international cooperation for development in forest and mangrove ecosystems in the Dominican Republic, and in the dry corridor of Guatemala, addressing topics of beekeeping and food security.
They have developed technological solutions such as the Nodriza patent, a passive system for capturing and progressively releasing rainwater into the root zone, successfully tested in cooperation projects and in trials with holm oaks, achieving 100% survival under water stress. Another innovation is a multifunctional device for olive groves that combines fauna watering with water capture and infiltration.
The results of these trials, published in Frontiers in Forests and Global Change, demonstrate the high efficiency of the Nodriza patent in holm oak survival and its adaptation to local crops in Guatemala, such as yam, where a 19% increase in production was achieved.
Membership in ceiA3 is highlighted for its coordinating role and facilitation of connections with the agri-food sector, enabling the transition from scientific knowledge to applicable solutions. Future challenges include continuing the development of vegetation covers, efficient water management, and seeking funding for the validation and potential industrialization of their technological solutions.
