This initiative, part of the Active Aging Program, aims to promote healthy habits among seniors in the province of Córdoba. The program, established in the municipality since 2005, enjoys excellent acceptance and is one of the most requested activities by the older population, according to Social Rights delegate Irene Aguilera.
The main objective is to foster active aging through physical activity in water, which enhances personal autonomy, health, and general well-being of participants. The activity takes place during the summer months, with a total of 250 participants distributed in two weekly shifts (Mondays and Wednesdays, or Tuesdays and Thursdays).
It is aimed at individuals over 65 years of age, people with disabilities from entities such as Futuro Singular and PRODE, and users of the Mental Health service of Peñarroya-Pueblonuevo, with prior authorization. Each session lasts one hour and includes exercises for mobility, warm-up, muscle strengthening, coordination, and cardiovascular resistance, led by specialized personnel.
Irene Aguilera, also president of the IPBS, highlighted the benefits of aquatic sports activities, which allow for movements with less impact on joints, ensuring safe and effective practice. In addition to physical benefits like improved flexibility and balance, the workshop has a significant social component, aimed at fostering socialization and preventing isolation.
This activity continues the work done throughout the year in the 'Maintenance Gymnastics Workshop' and is fully funded by the IPBS in collaboration with the Ayuntamiento de Peñarroya-Pueblonuevo. The city council provides a lifeguard for participant safety, and the Asociación Club Municipal de Pensionistas ‘El Jardín’ manages diffusion and registrations.
Program evaluation is ongoing through attendance records and participant satisfaction assessments, ensuring the quality and continuous improvement of this public service.
