Vox has widened its lead over the PSOE in Algeciras in the May 17th regional elections, consolidating its position as the second-largest party in the city and reaffirming its electoral stronghold in the province of Cádiz.

The recent Andalusian regional elections on May 17th have painted a new political picture in Algeciras, where Vox has strengthened its lead over the PSOE. The party, led in Andalusia by Manuel Gavira, has not only increased its advantage but also solidified its position in one of the key municipalities of the Campo de Gibraltar.
The results show that Vox's candidacy received 11,573 votes, accounting for 22.4% of the total, while the PSOE garnered 8,898 votes (17.2%). The People's Party remained the leading force with 37% of the ballots, relegating the socialists to third place.
The difference between Vox and the PSOE exceeds five percentage points, a trend that has been consolidating in the city for years. Algeciras has established itself as an enclave where Vox has successfully broken the historical two-party system between the PP and the PSOE.
This victory for Vox over the PSOE is not an isolated incident in Algeciras. The first time the party surpassed the socialists was in the general elections of November 10, 2019. Subsequently, in the Andalusian regional elections of 2022, Vox positioned itself as the second local force ahead of the PSOE. The trend was repeated in the general elections of July 23, 2023, where Vox again outperformed the PSOE despite the People's Party winning the city.
With the results from May 17th, there have now been four electoral events in which Vox has received more votes than the PSOE in Algeciras. The only exception is the municipal elections, where the socialists have maintained their lead over Vox in both 2019 and 2023.
Vox's growth is also evident when compared to the 2022 regional elections, as it has gained nearly 3,000 more votes and improved its support percentage, despite the fragmentation of votes on the right with the emergence of new parties.
The electoral behavior of Algeciras aligns with the pattern seen in other port and industrial municipalities in southern Spain. The city, marked by debates on security, immigration, and the economy of the Campo de Gibraltar, reaffirms itself as Vox's main stronghold in the province of Cádiz. While the PSOE maintained second place in nearby municipalities such as San Roque, Tarifa, or Los Barrios, Algeciras has stood out for its solid support of the ultra-conservative party.
Following the results, Vox's candidate for the Presidency of the Junta, Manuel Gavira, argued that Andalusians have sent a clear message to the PP, calling for agreements on issues such as security, housing, immigration, and tax reduction, while also reiterating the 'national priority' for access to social benefits and protected housing.
