The UGT Education union for Campo de Gibraltar has reiterated its complaint regarding the conditions at the Paco de Lucía Professional Music Conservatory in Algeciras. The union organization asserts that the construction of the new building has been the subject of "too many unfulfilled promises by all administrations, as well as varied and empty electoral propaganda".
The latest official announcement came from Antonio Sanz (PP) shortly before the Andalusian elections, who promised the "definitive boost" with an investment of approximately 5.5 million euros. However, UGT states that "the current facilities of the conservatory are not worthy of musical education" and laments that, "twelve years later, only a machine leveling the ground can be seen on this project, with no further known budget or defined plan".
The union reminds that "another academic year ends, the years pass very quickly, and the conservatory's activity does not stop". UGT values the "great effort" of the educational team who "has survived, once again, another academic year marked by dire conditions".
Despite the difficulties, the union highlights the Conservatory's "high level and international projection", evidenced by its concerts, recitals, educational activities, and Erasmus+ experiences in cities like Naples and Rimini-Cesena. "Some institutions are built on bricks, while others are sustained by vocations. The Paco de Lucía Conservatory undoubtedly belongs to the latter," UGT concludes.
The future conservatory will be located on the site of the former Fuentenueva barracks. The Regional Government of Andalusia plans a modern infrastructure specifically designed for music education. The City Council of Algeciras approved the transfer of the property in October 2014, rectifying and specifying the area in February 2015. The free transfer of the land to the Department of Education was formalized in April 2025, and the Regional Government officially accepted the building, which will bear the name of Paco de Lucía. The then Minister of Education, Patricia del Pozo, had previously indicated in May 2024 that the project was drafted and ready for execution.
