Transport Ministry to Install Smart Traffic Light and Provisional Lane on N-340

Measures aim to alleviate congestion between Tarifa and Algeciras, affected by a road collapse since February.

The Ministry of Transport and Sustainable Mobility has announced the installation of a smart traffic light and the creation of a provisional lane on the N-340, aiming to improve traffic flow between Tarifa and Algeciras, an area affected by a road collapse since February.

The most immediate measure will be the implementation of an intelligent traffic light system at kilometer 91 of the N-340. This device, replacing the current fixed-time system, will use cameras, sensors, and algorithms to analyze real-time traffic density and automatically adjust green and red light cycles, prioritizing the most congested flow. The intention is to significantly reduce daily queues, especially during peak hours and high mobility days, which have extended for several kilometers and even affected Algeciras.
In parallel, the Ministry of Transport is working on enabling a provisional lane to allow simultaneous circulation in both directions. This solution seeks to alleviate current congestion without the need for complete stops at each passing cycle. However, the operational date for this lane has not yet been confirmed, as it depends on ongoing geotechnical studies in the collapse zone, an area sensitive due to its proximity to the coastal slope.

"The lack of a timeline has generated uncertainty among regular road users, who for months have been dealing with an alternate passage system regulated by provisional traffic lights and significantly longer travel times than usual."

The collapse of the N-340 roadway, caused by storms in February, forced the partial closure of one lane and the implementation of an alternate circulation system. What was initially planned as a temporary measure has been prolonged, causing journeys between Algeciras and Tarifa, which normally take about 20 minutes, to exceed an hour at certain times. This situation worsens during weekends, holidays, and periods of high tourist influx.
The situation has directly impacted the daily lives of thousands of residents, especially in Tarifa, affecting workers, students, and access to essential services such as the Punta de Europa Hospital in Algeciras. The tourism and business sectors in Tarifa have also suffered cancellations and booking losses, raising concerns ahead of the upcoming high season. The management of the Tarifa Merchants Association (Acota) has positively assessed the announced measures, hoping they will alleviate problems before summer.
