In the message, Marina explains that the tumor is located in a delicate area requiring specialized attention, but he conveys a message of tranquility and confidence.
"I am aware that this news may cause concern and uncertainty. However, I wish to convey that I face this new stage with serenity, inner peace, and deep trust in God," he stated in the message. The priest focuses on hope, the support received, and the faith accompanying him.

The news has prompted an immediate reaction from numerous faithful, religious groups, and residents of Algeciras, where Juan José Marina has become one of the most recognizable voices in the city's ecclesial life over the past two decades. Born in Cádiz in 1973 and ordained a priest in September 2003, he spent a significant part of his early ministry at the San José parish.
Since October 2018, he has led the sanctuary parish of Our Lady of the Palm, the main church in Algeciras, while also serving as episcopal vicar of Campo de Gibraltar. His involvement in the city's social and religious life led him to be chosen as the herald for Christmas and later for the Algeciras Holy Week.
Juan José Marina's name gained wider recognition in January 2023 following the jihadist attack in Algeciras that resulted in the death of sacristan Diego Valencia. At that time, the priest explained in various interviews that he might have been the attacker's initial target. That tragedy deeply affected the community and made Marina a key voice conveying messages of unity and coexistence.
