ONE Launches New Maritime Route Strengthening Algeciras' Connection with West Africa

Japanese shipping company Ocean Network Express (ONE) has inaugurated the MAX service, enhancing the connectivity of the Port of Algeciras with Asia and Europe via West Africa.

Japanese shipping company Ocean Network Express (ONE) has launched a new maritime line, the Mediterranean Africa Express Service (MAX), which will enhance the connection of the Port of Algeciras with West Africa, integrating it into its global east-west network.

This initiative aims to establish a more robust connectivity between East Asia, Northern Europe, and West Africa, utilizing the ports of Algeciras and Tangier Med as key hubs. According to the shipping company, the primary goal is to ensure more precise transit times and optimize supply chain capacity.
The MAX service route, which will operate weekly, will commence at the TTI-A terminal in Algeciras. From there, vessels will proceed to Tangier Med (Morocco), Dakar (Senegal), Tema (Ghana), Lekki (Nigeria), and Abidjan (Ivory Coast), before returning to the Strait of Gibraltar basin. The start date for operations is set for July 7.
The implementation of this short-haul route allows ONE to integrate it as an auxiliary component within its east-west ecosystem, facilitating maritime trade between Asia and Europe. This intermediate link between the west coast of Africa and the Strait of Gibraltar, serving as a gateway to the European continent and the Mediterranean Sea, is crucial for the company's strategy.
Although ONE announced in December a reduction of its connections with Asia from three to two routes starting in April 2026, as part of a general restructuring of its east-west network, the creation of the MAX service represents an increase in the shipping company's activity at the Port of Algeciras.
The Port of Algeciras maintains its participation in the FE3 service, which connects Chinese ports such as Qingdao, Ningbo, and Yantian with Singapore and Northern Europe. Vessels on this line, after passing the Cape of Good Hope and making a stop in the Strait of Gibraltar, continue to Felixstowe (United Kingdom), Hamburg (Germany), and Antwerp (Belgium), before returning to Qingdao.
Regarding routes between Asia and the Mediterranean, Algeciras remains a key point on the IOM line, connecting India and Europe. Vessels on this route, departing from Nhava Sheva, make stops in the Mediterranean, including Valencia, Barcelona, Genoa (Italy), and Piraeus (Greece), using the port of Cadiz as both an entry and exit point.
Additionally, ONE includes the Port of Algeciras in its AT4 service, which links the east coast of Canada (Halifax) and the United States (New York, Norfolk, Savannah, and Miami) with Europe and the Mediterranean (Algeciras and Italy). The shipping company indicated in December that no general changes are expected for the transatlantic axis, so the AT4 route will maintain its current structure, pending future decisions.
