The Civil Guard has launched an investigation into an individual for the alleged commission of a crime against flora and fauna. This action follows the intervention by agents of the Nature Protection Service (Seprona), who seized five specimens of African spurred tortoises from a home located in Sotogrande, within the municipality of San Roque (Cádiz).

The operation was initiated after agents received information about the possible presence of wild animals inside a property in this residential area of the Cádiz coast. Upon arriving at the residence, they confirmed the existence of five large tortoises.

The seized specimens belong to the species Centrochelys sulcata, commonly known as the African spurred tortoise. It was determined that the animals lacked the required individual identification and the mandatory documentation to prove their legal origin, as well as the necessary administrative authorization for their possession.

The possession and trade of the African spurred tortoise, an exotic species, are subject to strict administrative control in Spain. Its ownership requires compliance with legal requirements, including proper identification of specimens and proof of their lawful origin, to ensure traceability and prevent illegal wildlife trafficking.

The irregular introduction or maintenance of these species can pose environmental and health risks, as they can become invasive if released or escape into the natural environment without control, affecting native fauna and local ecosystems. Current regulations establish supervision mechanisms for both their import and their possession in private homes.

This action in Sotogrande is part of the regular surveillance and control efforts carried out by Seprona in the province of Cádiz, focusing on biodiversity protection and compliance with environmental legislation. These inspections can originate from citizen complaints, tips, or their own investigations.
