The primary objective of this initiative, to be carried out at the fairgrounds, is to reinforce the municipality's environmental commitment, facilitate recycling within the hospitality sector, and improve upon the sustainability results achieved in previous years. The aim is to surpass the more than 6,000 kilograms of glass recovered in the last edition.
The operation will involve 16 stalls and various hospitality establishments. To aid source separation, over 50 wheeled bins with a 120-liter capacity will be distributed free of charge. Prior to the start of the Velada, an informational campaign will be conducted for sector professionals. The plan includes daily door-to-door collection of containers generated at the stalls, starting at 6:00 AM.
Susana Pérez Custodio, president of the Mancomunidad, emphasized the significance of this action for a more sustainable festival and the cooperation between local administration, stallholders, and the hospitality sector. She noted that the hospitality industry generates approximately 50% of single-use glass containers, making their involvement crucial for promoting the circular economy and combating climate change.
Manuel Abellán, Vice President of Environment for the Mancomunidad and CEO of ARCGISA, highlighted the positive trend in recycling indicators in La Línea de la Concepción. In 2025, citizens recycled a total of 529,345 kilograms of glass containers, averaging 8.2 kg per inhabitant. The city currently has 190 dedicated containers for this waste. Abellán also recalled that last year's Velada y Fiestas campaign successfully recovered 6,160 kilograms of glass at the fairgrounds.
This joint effort not only optimizes waste management during the festive period but also directly contributes to achieving Sustainable Development Goals related to responsible consumption and climate action, thereby enhancing the environmental quality of the locality and the entire Campo de Gibraltar region.
