The meeting, held this Wednesday, primarily aimed to complete the implementation of the agreement reached last June. This pact stipulates that border controls will be carried out by the National Police at Gibraltar's airport and port, thereby ensuring compliance with Schengen area regulations.
In addition to control management, the agreement includes shared use of the airport, the creation of a customs union between Gibraltar and the European Union, and the introduction of an indirect tax, similar to VAT, in The Rock. These measures seek to eliminate fiscal distortions and foster greater economic integration.
“"The process of removing all physical barriers will begin before July 15, to ensure that Gibraltar fully complies with the obligations set out in the Treaty. This will allow all the benefits of the Treaty to become effective from that date."
The meeting has been described as historic, marking the first time a Spanish Foreign Minister has met bilaterally with a Chief Minister of Gibraltar. This milestone symbolizes a new phase in relations between both parties, with a commitment to continue working for the benefit of the citizens of Gibraltar and the Campo de Gibraltar.
The last direct contact between a Foreign Minister and The Rock's Chief Minister occurred on July 23, 2020, although that occasion took place in Algeciras and focused on the impact of Brexit on the region.
