The partial demolition work on the facade, which was in an unstable condition and at risk of collapsing onto the street, is now fully visible. A specialized company has undertaken the task, aiming to preserve part of the facade and the iron grilles, considered to be of heritage value.
The alarm was raised in early March when the building's interior structure collapsed. On the night of March 10-11, part of the roof detached, affecting the upper floor slab and the first floor. Two weeks later, the deterioration continued, leading to an accumulation of material that dangerously pushed the facade towards the public road.
The building's owners, residents of Granada, have taken charge of the works, although the Algeciras City Council had considered carrying them out subsidiarily. The council will now focus on ensuring the preservation of heritage elements, such as the balcony grilles, which have already been removed.
The property had been subject to multiple municipal interventions due to its poor condition. As early as 2001, the General Urban Planning Plan already warned of its poor state. Despite a facade renovation in 2015, structural deterioration persisted, and municipal initiatives, including coercive fines, failed to reverse the situation, culminating in the current demolition.
