The Campo de Gibraltar Institute of Studies (IECG) has distinguished the professional career of journalist Juan Carlos Jiménez Laz, first director of Europa Sur, and his contribution to the development of information in the Campo de Gibraltar region. The tribute, organized by the Sixth Section, dedicated to Literature, Philology, and Information Sciences, took place in the Plenary Hall of the Mancomunidad de Municipios del Campo de Gibraltar.
During the gathering, Jiménez Laz's contribution to the launch and consolidation of Europa Sur, an informative project linked to the social, economic, and political reality of the region, was highlighted. In recognition of his career, he received the Institute's insignia, acknowledging his incorporation as a full member of the Sixth Section.
“"The journalist reviewed some moments of his career and shared memories and experiences in a dialogue with his professional colleagues Antonio Pérez Girón and Ildefonso Sena Rodríguez."
A letter was read from the mayor of Málaga, Francisco de la Torre, who excused his attendance and recalled the period when Jiménez Laz directed the municipal television of Málaga.
The tribute concluded with the presentation of a sculpture created by the Algeciras artist Juan Sierra, also a member of the IECG. The work, created in 2026, is composed of four planes of oxidized steel whose openings visually converge into a square crossed by light, establishing a parallel between art and journalism.
