New Cases in Campo de Gibraltar Courts Drop by 38%

Courts in the Campo de Gibraltar registered a 38.2% drop in new case intake during the first quarter of 2026, while resolving more cases and reducing the backlog.

The judicial administration in the Campo de Gibraltar region has experienced a notable decrease in workload. Between January and March 2026, the judicial bodies in the districts of Algeciras, La Línea, and San Roque received a total of 7,079 cases, compared to 11,471 files in the same period of 2025. This reduction represents a 38.2% decrease.
This decline in litigation aligns with the trend observed across Andalusia, where regional courts recorded 331,321 cases, a 24.7% decrease from the previous year. The report from the Statistical Service of the General Council of the Judiciary (CGPJ) indicates that this situation reverses the upward trend of past years, with year-on-year decreases in civil (42.1% less) and criminal (10.2% less) jurisdictions.
The judicial district of Algeciras, the busiest in the region, accounted for 69% of the cases filed, with 4,861 new files (a 36% decrease from the first quarter of 2025). A total of 5,360 cases were resolved, exceeding new filings by 499, which reduced the pending caseload by 17.4%. The civil jurisdiction in Algeciras saw its intake decrease by 53.5%, while the criminal jurisdiction decreased by 6.1%.
In La Línea de la Concepción, the intake of new cases dropped by 45.2%, with 1,300 files compared to 2,374 the previous year. Judicial bodies resolved 1,377 cases, leaving 6,472 pending cases (a 7.5% decrease). The decline was more pronounced in the civil jurisdiction (52.3%) than in the criminal one (30.8%).
The judicial district of San Roque, which includes Jimena, Castellar, and Tesorillo, recorded 918 incoming cases, a 39.3% decrease from the previous year. A total of 1,066 cases were processed, resulting in 3,087 pending cases (an 18.6% decrease). The civil jurisdiction fell by 41.2% and the criminal by 35%.
Nationally, the litigation rate stood at 37.15 cases per 1,000 inhabitants, ten points lower than the previous year. Canary Islands (45.01), Asturias (41.73), and Madrid (40.59) lead in litigation rates, while Andalusia remains slightly above the national average with 37.45.
