Poniente beach in La Línea de la Concepción is facing a new wave of invasive algae wash-ups. In the past week, municipal workers have removed approximately 50,000 kilograms of this algae, highlighting the scale of the problem affecting the coast of Campo de Gibraltar.
The City Council's Municipal Beaches Department has expanded cleaning operations to other coastal areas, albeit with a lesser presence of algae. The council has noted that the city is one of nine municipalities in the region benefiting from aid from the Provincial Council of Cádiz, aimed at mitigating the impact of this phenomenon.
La Línea de la Concepción will receive 90,000 euros from the Provincial Council to cover costs related to algae removal, transport to authorized landfills, machinery rental and acquisition, as well as personnel hiring and coastal cleaning services.
This aid, distributed based on population, specific impact, and coastal stretch, is part of a provincial investment exceeding 1.8 million euros to combat algae accumulation. The Provincial Council supports this program despite lacking direct environmental responsibilities for the coastline, due to the growing impact of the invasive species on key sectors like fishing and tourism, and its disruption of marine ecosystems.
