With virtual safety guaranteed in the Primera Federación, the Algeciras CF locker room has set a new challenge for the final five matchdays of the competition. The 'albirrojo' team now confidently aspires to secure a ticket for the next edition of the Copa del Rey, a privilege the club from Nuevo Mirador has not enjoyed since 2021.
Currently, Algeciras CF holds the seventh position in Group II's standings, which, given the current circumstances with two reserve teams among the top five, would grant them a Copa del Rey spot. This opportunity serves as an incentive for clubs whose chances of reaching the promotion playoffs to Segunda División are becoming more challenging.
The current configuration of Group II shows Eldense and Sabadell vying for the lead, with high probabilities of finishing among the top five. Behind them, Atlético Madrileño and Villarreal B, being reserve teams, cannot participate in the Copa del Rey, thus freeing up three spots for the fifth, sixth, and seventh-placed teams. Europa defends the fifth position, followed by Cartagena (sixth) and Algeciras (seventh).
Despite their favorable position, there are still 15 points at stake, and the situation could change. Teruel, just one point behind, is the main pursuer, while Alcorcón, Antequera, and Hércules are three points further back. Other teams like Ibiza and Real Murcia, though more distant, still maintain mathematical possibilities.
Algeciras CF's last appearance in the Copa del Rey was on December 1, 2021, in a knockout match against Unionistas de Salamanca at Nuevo Mirador. That game, which ended in the team's elimination, generated controversy among fans due to the experimental lineup used.
The history of Algeciras CF and the Copa del Rey is documented in the book Un equipo de Copa, by Francisco García Corral and Ricardo Almagro, which reviews the club's most notable moments in the tournament since its debut in 1943.
