Agaden demands removal of invasive seaweed "illegal dump" in Tarifa

The environmental organization calls for immediate action due to environmental and landscape impact after the waste disposal fee exemption.

The environmental organization Agaden has urged the Tarifa City Council to immediately eliminate the "illegal dump" of invasive seaweed accumulated next to the wastewater treatment plant.

The association Agaden-Ecologistas en Acción has formally requested the Tarifa City Council to proceed "immediately" with the removal of the "illegal dump" of invasive seaweed located next to the wastewater treatment plant. The environmental group argues that "there is no longer an economic justification" to maintain what it calls an "uncontrolled deposit", especially after the Junta de Andalucía declared a state of force majeure and extreme necessity for the massive wash-ups of Rugulopterix okamurae on the Andalusian coasts, exempting affected municipalities from the disposal fee.
Agaden positively assesses the publication in the BOJA (Official Gazette of the Junta de Andalucía) of the Board's agreement, which recognizes the exceptional nature of the massive arrival of this invasive alga. The agreement allows municipalities to be exempt from the penalty fee for depositing these supposed non-recyclable waste in landfills. The resolution itself admits that municipalities like Tarifa have removed over 11,000 tons of algae in a single summer, quadrupling previous years' figures, and acknowledges the "enormous environmental, economic, and sanitary impact" caused by this biological invasion on the Andalusian coast.
The organization recalls that the request to remove this unauthorized dump was made over a year ago and that the deposit "still continues". "There is no longer an economic justification to maintain this uncontrolled deposit, as the new regulations eliminate the landfill fee cost for affected municipalities," they insist. Leaving this accumulation of algae in the open air, they warn, represents a "serious environmental and landscape impact", in addition to "possible risks from leachate, bad odors, and effects on the natural environment and public health". The BOJA explicitly warns that the fermentation and putrefaction of these algae generate bad odors and leachate with "possible negative effects on the environment, public health, and tourism".

"The Board expressly establishes that the delivery of this waste to landfills is exempt from the state penalty tax of 30 euros per ton, considering it an exceptional situation of force majeure."

Agaden
Agaden calls on the Tarifa City Council and the Junta de Andalucía for a "transparent, legal, and environmentally responsible" management of the waste from the invasive alga, avoiding "provisional solutions that end up becoming new sources of pollution" and promoting its valorization, as established by the new Waste Law. They also demand an "urgent environmental restoration plan" for the affected area next to the treatment plant, as well as "periodic controls" to prevent new uncontrolled dumping and accumulations.
