The Montilla City Council has initiated renovation work on the roofs of its municipal warehouses, a project that will allow for the safe removal of asbestos, improve working conditions, and enhance the building's energy efficiency.

The works, with a total budget of 94,079.11 euros, focus on the safe dismantling and removal of asbestos-containing cement fiber plates. These will be replaced by a new galvanized steel sheet roof with mineral wool insulation, covering an area of 1,237 square meters.
The intervention is co-financed by a 40,000 euro subsidy from the Provincial Council of Córdoba for asbestos removal, with the remaining investment covered by the City Council's own resources. The company HIMACO Obras y Promociones S.L. was awarded the contract for the works, which have an estimated execution period of two months.
The mayor of Montilla, Rafael Llamas, highlighted that the action complies with current legislation and improves the working conditions of municipal staff by eliminating a material harmful to health. He emphasized that the roof renovation prepares the infrastructure for the future installation of photovoltaic solar panels, aligning with the council's sustainability strategy.
Llamas also underscored the City Council's investment effort to complete the project, which exceeds the subsidy from the Provincial Council, and the council's capacity to secure external aid. He noted that these improvements contribute to a more sustainable and efficient city model.
The Councilor for Environment and Infrastructure, Raquel Casado, explained that the municipal warehouses had the largest surface area of asbestos cement roofs in the municipal asbestos inventory, with removal being mandatory before 2028 according to Law 7/2022. She detailed that the asbestos removal work has already concluded and the installation of the new roof is now underway.
This solution will improve the building's energy performance, enhance habitability conditions for staff, and allow for future photovoltaic panel installation without additional structural reinforcements. The warehouses currently house the Public Works, Public Lighting, Environment, and Culture services. Asbestos removal is being carried out by the specialized company Demoliciones Córdoba, S.L.
