The Montilla City Council, through its Tourism Delegation, has organized a special setup to facilitate the safe observation of the solar eclipse next Wednesday, August 12th. The astronomical phenomenon will be partially visible in the municipality, reaching a maximum of 96% visibility at 8:36 PM.
As explained by the Councilor for Tourism, Adrian Lapsley, the eclipse will begin in Montilla at 7:41 PM and conclude with sunset, scheduled for 9:14 PM. Observation will be possible from any point with a clear view towards the west.
As the main observation point, the grounds of the Castillo del Gran Capitán will open its doors from 7:30 PM. The importance of using specific, homologated eclipse glasses according to standard ISO 12312-2 is emphasized. The City Council will provide a limited number of these glasses to attendees who do not have them.
To complement the experience, the educational video Eclipsados, produced by the Ministry of Culture, will be screened.
The Council recommends not looking directly at the sun or using conventional sunglasses, cameras, or binoculars not specifically designed for solar observation. It urges extreme caution during travel and fire prevention measures in natural areas, as well as checking the weather forecast, as clouds or haze could affect visibility.
This initiative aims to offer citizens the opportunity to enjoy a unique astronomical event from one of the city's most emblematic heritage sites, combining education, observation, and knowledge of local heritage with safety and responsibility.
