From the early hours of the day, the carts gathered at the fairgrounds of Andújar, preparing for the ascent. The pilgrims, organized by seniority, began their journey towards the Sanctuary, where the Virgen de la Cabeza awaits their arrival.
The Aires de Romería group, with 42 years of history, exemplifies the spirit of this festivity. Its members, some with almost half a century of pilgrimage, enliven the journey with music and dances, transforming the path into a continuous celebration. Stops are made following a strict protocol to ensure the orderly progress of all groups.
“"We are very excited. We had known Aires de Romería for a long time, but until now they hadn't opened up spots, and the truth is they have welcomed us wonderfully. We are a close-knit group."
Before reaching Lugar Nuevo, the traditional baptism of new members takes place, a welcoming moment that strengthens community bonds. One of the new pilgrims highlighted the deep devotion they feel for the Virgen de la Cabeza, a date that holds an even more special meaning for her.
After crossing the bridge, cheers for the patron saint of Andújar resonate loudly. The pilgrims quickly set up their camps to eat before continuing the ascent. A spokesperson for the group emphasized that the members are more than friends; they form “a big family” united by their devotion to La Morenita, a central figure in the identity of Andújar's inhabitants.
“"For us, the pilgrimage begins the moment it concludes. That's when we start thinking about what we're going to prepare for the next year."
